ππ¨ The Shoot and Scoot: Agents Attack a Married Couple, Then Vanish
We need to invent a new term for what happened in Portland on Thursday. It wasn't just an "officer-involved shooting." It was a federal hit-and-run. In a shocking display of cowardice and lawlessness, U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents opened fire on a married couple in a hospital parking lotβ¦and then simply drove away, leaving their victims to bleed out on the pavement.
The details coming out of Oregon describe a scene that belongs in a failed state, not a major American city. The shooting took place outside Adventist Health, a sanctuary of healing that was turned into a kill zone. Agents executed a "targeted stop," fired multiple rounds, striking the husband in the arm and his wife in the chest. But instead of securing the scene or rendering aid (the absolute baseline duty of any law enforcement officer) they ghosted.
When the Portland Police Bureau finally received the 911 call, it didn't come from the agents. It came from the victims. The wounded couple, terrified and bleeding, had to drive themselves miles away from the hospital just to feel safe enough to ask for help. When local police arrived to treat them, there wasn't a single federal agent in sight.
This is the behavior of a cartel, not a government. In any civilized system of policing, the moment you discharge your weapon, you own the aftermath. You call the ambulance. You secure the evidence. You answer for what you did. By fleeing the scene, these agents didn't just violate procedure; they confessed their own guilt. They shot two people and decided that saving their own careers was more important than saving the lives they just jeopardized.
The official excuse from DHSβ¦that the driver "attempted to run them over"β¦is becoming a sick refrain. It is the exact same "vehicle as a weapon" justification they used to explain away the killing of Renee Good in Minneapolis just days ago. It has become the universal "Get Out of Jail Free" card for federal agents: step in front of a car, claim fear, open fire, and now, apparently, drive home for dinner while your victims fight for their lives.
DHS calls this a "defensive" action. But since when do defenders flee? If this was a righteous shoot, why didn't they stand their ground and explain it to the local police? The disappearance of the shooters suggests they knew exactly how this looked. They knew that gunning down a couple in a hospital parking lot was indefensible, so they chose to disappear into the fog of federal immunity.
This incident creates a terrifying precedent. We are now living in a country where armed federal agents can drift into your city, shoot you in your car, and vanish before the sirens wail. It strips the badge of any remaining honor and reveals the ugly truth of this new era: The federal government does not view itself as the protector of the peace. It views itself as a predator that strikes and retreats.
For the Portland Police, this must be a moment of reckoning. They were left to clean up the blood while the perpetrators hid behind the shield of the Department of Homeland Security. It is a slap in the face to local sovereignty and a reminder that, in the eyes of this administration, local cops are just the janitors for federal violence.
We cannot let "shoot and scoot" become the new standard of engagement. If agents can open fire and leave the scene without handcuffs on their wrists, then the rule of law is officially dead. We are just waiting to see who they target next.
